Siena - Italian Flavor

During my stay in Florence I make a day trip to Siena, which isn't remotely located and can be reached by bus or in the best case, getting a ride or hitchhike there. This city will give the impression of a real Italian city, with tiny narrow little streets, houses piled up onto a hill, cramped together tightly with the cathedral sticking out in the middle, indicating the center, the standard iconic freshly washed laundries hanging outside of the windows and many other things that make those villages and cities in Italy unique.

Sightseeing & Strolling

An Italian City at it's Best

I arrive around midmorning in Siena, a friendly, talkative Italian guy took me with him in the car all the way to Siena. He is living in Florence but covers the distance to Siena for his work every day, therefore he will also take me back when he finishes, leaving me plenty of time to look around. He drops me off the train and bus station, from where I walk right into the center headfirst, exploring the small streets, with gorgeous little stone balconies attached to the houses fronts and arches keeping the buildings from slumping into each other while the tooth of time nags on them.

As it is my first italian city, once I get to the outbounds of the center I am amazed by the narrowness of the houses, which go up along the hill and seem like they have been piled upon each other from afar, the ones in the back rows trying hard to get a glimpse over the ones in the front by growing even higher in the air. A lovable gorgeous sight, I am amused by observing the various windows, with local inhabitants hanging their fresh laundry, shouting down to their children playing in the streets or simply looking through the window, apparently themselves enjoying the incoming sun and being entertained by tourists like me, staring right onto their facade, deeply sunk into my observing game.

Churches

The Cathedral of Siena

It wouldn't be a stereotype of an Italian city if it wouldn't be harboring a magnificent church, enthroned in the city surveying it's citizens from above. The grey blueish romanesque-gothic cathedral can be seen from the outbounds, the in comparison to the rest of the long squared building slender looking bell tower juts out high into the sky. Anyways spread across the city you will also find other churches which are worth to pay a visit inside, and which will be surely encountering your path sooner or later while strolling around.

Viewpoint

The city in a small Scale

It may seem controversial, but the best part of visiting Siena for me, is to go to the outsides of the city center area, which can be easily done from several sides. As you circle around, a new amazing point of view opens up from all sides, looking differently and being displayed in postcards allover the tourist shops in Siena. Here I linger for longer while the day has passed quickly today. Indeed Siena turned out to be a nice city, though crammed and packed tightly, the chaos I expected due to the fact that movies somehow seem to exaggerate that point if shots are taken in those streets. From here I return back to Florence, taking with me good impressions.
